The Annual BPI Lecture at the University of South Africa (UNISA) took place on 05 February 2025 at UNISA’s Pretoria campus. The lecture was titled “Whither a Democratic Dividend or Demographic Disaster: What Is to Be Done?” and featured former Statistician-General, Professor Pali Lehohla, as the main speaker.
The event was moderated by Sunday Times deputy editor Mr. Mike Siluma and included a panel comprising:
- Dr. Theuns Eloff – Academic and Director of Companies,
- Mr. Daryl Swanepoel – Inclusive Society Institute CEO,
- Dr. Kefiloe Masiteng – Former head of the National Planning Commission’s secretariat, and
- Dr. Nthabiseng Moleko – development economist.
The purpose of these lectures is to:
Stimulate Public Dialogue: Bring critical national issues into the public spotlight, encouraging debate and discussion on social, economic, and political matters affecting the country.
Inform Policy and Practice: By inviting respected experts and thought leaders, they aim to influence and inform public policy and strategic planning.
Promote Democratic Engagement: Foster civic awareness and responsibility by addressing themes like governance, inequality, development, and the challenges facing democracy.
Bridge Academia and Society: Create a platform where academics, policymakers, civil society, and the public can engage with research and real-world data to explore possible solutions to national problems.
Honor Intellectual Leadership: Celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to their fields, using their insights to inspire action and reflection.
